Maria Sharapova, Jelena Jankovic and Nicole Vaidisova were spotted hard at work at the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy in Florida last Tuesday, February 24. Maria is preparing for her return, after being sidelined for almost 7 months now, to the WTA tour where she has already slipped down to number 23 in the world.
I hope we see these three at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, CA which begins on March 9. I know I’ll be there!
Andy Roddick, per usual, will be leading the US Davis Cup team in their opening round match against a crippled Swiss team. The Swiss will be without Roger Federer who has been suffering from a back problem and has withdrawn from this week’s Barclay’s Dubai Tennis Championships and the Davis Cup tie against the US. The Americans will be coming in as heavy favorites and will be playing in front of a home crowd in Birmingham, AL.
Andy Roddick also withdrew from this week’s Barclay’s Dubai Tennis Championships. However, not due to injury but in protest to the UAE’s decision to deny Israeli player, Shahar Peer, a visa to enter the country. Andy is the defending champion at that event. Hats off to you for taking a stand, Andrew.
The almost retired, Marat Safin, loses a couple of things in Dubai. First, some hair which I think was a good move. He looks good, no? Then, he loses his cool during his first round match against Richard Gasquet. I thought he said he’s only playing to have a good time out there from now on? And finally, he loses the match 3-6, 7-5, 3-6. Err.. I’d be pretty pissed too if I lose back to back in the first round.
Former Wimbledon champions, Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf, will be playing exhibition matches with Kim Clijsters and Tim Henman on May 17 at the All England Club to test the new Centre Court roof. The event, “A Centre Court Celebration,” is designed to test the roof and air management system with live matches in front of a capacity crowd of 15,000. It will feature a men’s singles, a women’s singles and a mixed doubles match. The matches will be played in a pro-set format—the first to eight games, with a tiebreaker at 8-8.
“There is no tennis venue more special to me than Centre Court at Wimbledon,” Graf said. “It just doesn’t get any better. I couldn’t be more honored to play there again with my husband Andre, and tennis greats Kim and Tim. It will mean so much to return to Wimbledon and … relive so many wonderful memories.”
Tickets will go on sale March 12 at $50 each.
The Championships at Wimbledon tournament will begin on June 22.
